Softball Finishes Day 1 of the KCAC Tournament 1-1

BRANSON, Mo. – The Ottawa University softball team finished day one of the KCAC Tournament with a record of 1-1. The Braves defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan University 5-1 in their first game of the day before falling 5-3 to Friends University.

The Braves struck first, taking the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kara Hafenstine walked. OU took advantage of an Eagle miscue to take the lead. Macy Roever singled, moving Hafenstine to second.

A throwing error by the OKWU pitcher scored Hafenstine and OU led 1-0. Roever then stole second and moved to third on a single up the middle by Addison Spencer. Mallory Dunn scored Roever with a ground out to first and OU led 2-0.

Ottawa increased its lead in the bottom of the second inning. Katie Enneking reached first with an infield single. Alex Genty was hit by a pitch, giving OU runners on first and second. Megan Kennedy moved Enneking and Genty into scoring position with a sacrifice punt. Hafenstine scored both with a ground rule double, giving OU a 4-0 lead. Ottawa scord its final run of the inning on Spencer's sacrifice fly, giving OU a 5-0 lead.

OKWU cut into the Brave lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning, 5-1. The Braves only allowed two Eagles on base in their final three at bats and OU took the 5-1 victory.

  • Macy Roever was 3-for-4 t the plate, scoring one run.
  • Katie Enneking had two hits in three at bats, scoring a run.
  • Lanie Becker pitched seven innings, earning the win. She struck out two.

Ottawa scored first, taking the lead in the top of the first inning. Kara Hafenstine walked. Macy Roever reached first on an error by the Falcon first baseman and Hafenstine advanced to third. Addison Spencer scored both with a single and the Braves had a 2-0 lead.

Friends answered in the bottom of the first, tying the game at 2-2. The Falcons broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, pushing two runs across home plate to take a 4-2 lead. Friends scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 5-2 lead.

Ottawa tried to rally in the top of the seventh. Zoe Butts scored Elizabeth Palmer with a double to right-center but that is all the closer the Braves would get as Friends took the 5-3 victory.

Ottawa (30-20) returns to the diamond on Thursday, May 1 at the Brason Rec Plex for the KCAC Tournament. OU will play the winner of the Sterling College/Tabor College game at 10:00 a.m.
