Women's Soccer Drops KCAC Opener to Saint Mary

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - The Ottawa women's soccer team started their conference schedule with a loss as they fell to Saint Mary by a score of 1-2 on Wednesday evening in Leavenworth.

After a few chances by either team, Saint Mary broke through with a strike by Jordan Tran outside of the box in the 36th minute. The Spires went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Saint Mary extended that lead when Kate Erpelding rebounded a deflected free kick in the 61st minute. Ottawa halved their lead in 78th minute on a header by Ella Stillings via a corner kick from Melissa Grohmann, but the ensuing efforts were not enough to tie the game.

Saint Mary led total shots 17 to nine and shots on goal seven to three. Makena Tapia made five saves in goal for Ottawa.

Ottawa (1-3-1, 0-1-0 KCAC) returns to the field on Saturday, September 20 as they host Bethel College at AdventHealth Field. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM.
