WICHITA, Kan. - The Ottawa men's and women's indoor track and field teams both finished 5th in the team standings at the KCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, but in doing so they had one of the one of the best weekends in program history.
On the women's side, Roy'Janae Brown set a new school record in the 60m dash—blazing to a school record time of 7.57 seconds, breaking Adia Vaughn's record of 7.63 set in 2020. Brown's time was actually faster than the previous KCAC championship record of 7.60, but she finished 2nd overall to Friends University athlete Tiyna Ridge's 7.39. Brown is now ranked 11th nationally in the 60m dash. She was also selected as Ottawa's Champion of Character at the conclusion of the meet. Brown followed that up a short time later with yet another school-record breaking time of 24.66 seconds in the 200m dash, only to be edged at the line by OU's own JayOnna Perry, who won the event with a new school and KCAC championship record time of 24.53.
Perry's 200m win was actually her 4th individual championship of the weekend and her 3rd KCAC record. On Friday, she won the long jump title with a KCAC record leap of 5.86 meters (19' 2.75"). Then on Saturday she won the 60m hurdles title in a KCAC championship record time of 8.58 seconds, the 400m dash in a school record time of 56.26, and the aforementioned 200m dash title. On top of all that, she placed 4th in the 60m dash and 4th in the high jump, earning a total of 50 of the team's 91 points.
Coach Whittaker had this to say: "I've never seen anything like this before. I honestly don't have the vocabulary to put into words how dominate her performance was. If you weren't there to witness it, you missed out on something truly epic. Frankly, our entire sprint crew was epic. Roy's races were unbelievable. Domonic Atkinstall fought back from injury to win the men's 200m title. Daniel Campbell shocked everyone by finishing runner-up in the 60 when he was seeded 8th coming into the weekend… We had four women in the 200m final, three women place in the top 10 in the 400, Riley Hartman and Wilson Legrande had great races in the men's 400, Braylon Brown came out of nowhere to finish 5th in the men's 60 hurdles… This group just blew me away this weekend. I stopped counting PR's once we got above 30. I just couldn't keep up."
Casey Evink was selected as the OU men's Champion of Character.
