STERLING, Kan. – (20) Ottawa University nearly erased a mid-game deficit, tying the game in the ninth inning, but Sterling College pushed across the winning run in the bottom half to hand the Braves a 7-6 loss on Friday afternoon.
The Braves struck first and held an early 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of home runs, but Sterling responded with a six-run stretch across the third and fourth innings to swing momentum. Ottawa battled back late, scoring twice in the eighth and tying the game in the ninth before the Warriors ended the contest with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the inning.
Ottawa opened the scoring in the second inning when
Dane Lujan launched a solo home run to left field. The Braves extended the lead in the third as
Dylan Snead crushed a two-run homer that scored
Jose Lopez and made it 3-0.
Sterling answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run homer from Emmanuel Huerta Cardenas. The Warriors added two more runs in the fourth inning to build a 6-3 advantage.
The Braves began their comeback in the eighth inning.
Julius Ryan singled and
Jeremy Freeman, Jr. reached after being hit by a pitch to set up the rally. An RBI fielder's choice from
Jose Vega, combined with a Sterling throwing error, allowed two runs to score and cut the deficit to 6-5.
Ottawa tied the game in dramatic fashion in the ninth.
Declan Brown singled and
Garrett Dodd entered as a pinch runner. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Dodd came home on a wild pitch to even the score at 6-6.
Sterling, however, responded in the bottom of the ninth. After loading the bases, a hit-by-pitch forced in the winning run to secure the 7-6 victory.
