Coach Spongberg is in his third season as a coach with the OU baseball program, spending the 2019 and 2020 seasons as a graduate assistant coach. He works with the Braves' pitching staff.

Before coming to Ottawa University, Spongberg spent the summer of 2018 as head coach of the Haysville Aviators. Prior to that, he spent the spring of 2018 as an assistant coach with the Morningside College baseball program. Spongberg was a student assistant with the MC baseball program in the spring of 2017.

Spongberg was the clubhouse manager for the Sioux City Explorers from the summer of 2016 to the fall of 2017. He also spent two years giving private lessons to younger players.

Spongberg was a four year letterman on the baseball diamond for Morningside College. He was a member of the leadership council, helped the Mustangs to the 2016 NAIA playoffs, earned First Team All-GPAC as a relief pitcher in 2016 and was a three-time Honorable Mention All-GPAC selection.

While playing for the Haysville Aviators, he helped lead them to a second place finish at the 2015 NBC World Series and a sixth place finish at the 2014 NBC World Series. Spongberg was named the 2014 Walter Johnson League Co-Pitcher of the Year and earned NBC World Series All-American Team honors in 2014.

Spongberg graduated from Morningside College in May of 2016 with a bachelors of arts in business administration with a coaching endorsement.
