Braves Down Friends, 28-13

WICHITA, Kan. – The Ottawa University football team earned its first victory of 2022 with a 28-13 win over Friends University at Adair-Austin Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Braves finished with 377 yards of total offense, 247 passing and 130 yards rushing. The OU defense held the Falcons to 327 yards of offense, below their average of 351.8 per game.

Friends struck first scoring on a 42 yard field goal with 5:27 to go in the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter, the OU defense came away with a pick. Kyle Reynolds intercepted Falcon quarterback Jack Mullen and Ottawa took over on the Falcon 48 yard line at the start of the second quarter.

The OU offense took advantage of its good field position. Five plays and 48 yards later, Gunnar Madere went air borne and landed in the end zone. The Lewis McMullen PAT kick was good and Ottawa had a 7-3 lead with 12:38 to go in the half.

On the Falcons next offensive possession, Friends moved to ball to the OU 26 yard line. That is where the drive stalled, and the Falcons attempted a 43 yard field goal. The kick went wide left and Ottawa took over on its own 26 yard line.

OU was not able to hold on to the ball long, turning it over on an interception and Friends had it in Brave territory on the 18 yard line. The OU defense held firm with Friends attempting a 34 yard field goal. This attempt hit the right up right and Ottawa had the ball on its own 20 with 5:46 left in the half.

This time the Brave offense was able to cross the goal line. OU put together an eight play, 80 yard drive. Jared Daniels ran the ball in from seven yards out. McMullen's extra point kick was good and with 3:58 to go in the first half, the Braves had a 14-3 lead.

The ball hawking OU defense came away with another take away on the Falcons' next offensive possession. Reynolds earned his second interception of the game, picking off Mullen at the OU two yard line. He returned the ball 27 yards to the Brave 29 yard line and OU took over with 21 seconds on the clock.

The OU offense moved the ball to the Falcon 34 yard line. Ottawa fumbled and Friends took over with four seconds left on the clock. The Flacons ran out the clock and OU took a 14-3 lead into the locker room.

Friends received the ball to start the second half and did not attempt a pass on its opening drive. The Falcons made a move at quarterback, bringing in Andrew Arnold to start the second half. Friends moved the ball to the OU seven and had it third and goal. Saamad Ali and Tony Aiono, Jr. came away with the defensive stop and the Falcons attempted a 22 yard field goal. The kick hit the right upright once again and Ottawa still had its 14-3 lead.  

At the start of the fourth quarter, Friends had the ball on the OU seven yard line but a block in the back negated its six yard gain to move the ball to the one yard line. The Falcons attempted a 39 yard field goal This one was good and OU's lead was cut to 14-6 with 12:30 left in regulation.

The Ottawa offense answered on its first possession of the fourth quarter. OU's eight play, 76 yard drive was highlighted by a 48 yard pass from Billy Maples to Madere. Malaki Peko scored from one yard out and after the McMullen extra point kick, the Braves led 21-6 with 9:18 on the clock.

Both teams exchanged punts and Friends had the ball with 2:13 left in the game on its own six yard line. Five plays later, the OU defense had its fourth takeaway of the game. On second and 10 rom the Falcon 21 yard line, Santino Gee had a strip sack. He picked up the fumble and returned the ball nine yards for the touchdown. The McMullen extra point attempt was good and Ottawa had a 28-6 lead with 1:12 left in the game.

Friends was able to score with 28 seconds on the clock, cutting OU's lead to 28-13. Ottawa recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock, taking the 28-13 victory.
