Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – The Ottawa University men's soccer team fell 5-3 to the Saint Mary Spires on Wednesday evening at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kan.
There was an equal amount of opportunities for both teams to start the game, but the Spires opened things up with two goals in a period of five minutes to take a 2-0 lead after 23 minutes. The Braves would get one back shortly after in the 28
th minute, a goal by
Bence Molnar assisted by
Slobodan Novicevic. Just when it looked like the Braves would go into halftime down just 2-1, the Spires added one more goal to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
After an uneventful first 20 minutes to the second half, the Spires would strike again to take 4-1 lead in the 65th minute. Molnar struck again in the 77th minute to cut the deficit back to two, bringing life back to the Braves. Following Molnar's second goal, the Spires obviously kept more numbers back and began to park the bus. The Spires still had the threat to hit on counterattack with the Braves throwing more numbers forward in their attempt to mount a comeback. The Braves were able to create some quality chances, but all it took was one more USM counterattack that produced a goal to essentially seal the game. Molnar did the best he could to keep the game close, scoring off a free kick in the 87th minute to complete a hat-trick.
Despite the result, this Braves' team has lots of promise for a young team that developed faster than most expected under first year head coach
James Cottage.
