Braves are Defeated by Avila, 39-9

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Ottawa University football team was defeated 39-9 by Avila University on Saturday afternoon at The Z. The Braves finished the game with 246 yards of offense while Avila had 387.

Avila struck first scoring two touchdowns within four minutes of each to take a 13-0 lead at the 7:23 mark in the first quarter. The OU defense slowed down the Avila offense after that second touchdown, holding the Eagles scoreless in the second quarter.

Ottawa got on the board with 9:20 left in the second quarter. The offense put together an 11 play, 4:30 drive that ended in a 27 yard field goal by Lewis McMullen and OU was within 13-3.

The Eagles moved the ball to the OU 21 yard line, where the drive stalled with 4:34 left in the second quarter. The 48 yard field goal attempt was wide right and the Braves took over on their own 21 yard line.

The Braves drove the ball down the field after the missed Avila field goal. Jared Daniels had a run of 57 yards to the Avila 19 yard line. Ottawa's drive stalled and McMullen came out to attempt a 34 yard field goal. That attempt was no good and Avila took over on its own 20 yard line with 1:46 left in the half. The OU defense held, forcing a punt. Ottawa ran out the final seconds of the half as Avila took a 13-3 lead into the locker room.

Avila received the ball to start the second half. Four plays later, the Eagles were in the end zone. The extra point attempt was good, and Avila led 20-3.

The Braves were forced to punt on their first possession of the second half. Avila scored again, increasing its lead to 27-3 on its second offensive possession of the second half.

The Eagles scored on a safety and put another touchdown on the board at the start of the fourth quarter, taking a 36-3 lead over OU. With 7:40 on the clock, the Braves were able to cut into the Avila lead. Billy Maples threw a five yard touchdown pass to Isaac Gibson. The extra point attempt was no good and OU was down 36-9.

Avila scored one more time in the game, a 28 yard field goal at the end of the fourth quarter, to take the 39-9 victory.
