OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University football team lost 27-18 to McPherson College at AdventHealth Field on Saturday night. The Braves finished the game with 400 yards of offense, 185 yards passing and 215 yards rushing. McPherson had 452 yards of offense, 164 yards through the air and 288 yards on the ground.
Ottawa struck first, taking a 7-0 lead over McPherson at the 9:40 mark in the first quarter. The OU defense forced a Bulldog punt on fourth and eight and
Devin Johnston returned the ball 63 yards for the touchdown.
Lewis McMullen's extra point kick was good and the Braves had a 7-0 lead. Johnston's 63 yard return is tied for ninth in the OU record book for longest punt return in a game. It is also tied for seventh for longest punt return for a touchdown in a game.
Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the half and OU took a 7-0 lead into the locker room.
The Bulldogs tied the game with 5:21 to go in the third quarter. Tristan Szabo threw a 20 yard touchdown pass to
Michael Banks on a fourth and four. The extra point kick was good and the game was tied 7-7.
Ottawa was able to retake the lead on its next offensive possession. The Braves drove the ball to the McPherson 23 yard line. McMullen connected on a 40 yard field goal, giving OU a 10-7 lead with 2:20 left in the third quarter.
MC took its first lead of the game just six seconds into the fourth quarter. Jonathan White ran the ball in from nine yards out. The extra point kick by Caden Bush went through the uprights and McPherson had a 14-10 lead with 14:54 left in the contest.
After the Braves turned the ball over on downs, McPherson extended its lead. Szabo threw a 25 yard touchdown pass to Aidan Frieson and after the Bush extra point kick, the Bulldogs led 21-10 at the 7:55 mark in the fourth quarter.
Ottawa cut into the deficit with 4:44 left in the game.
Billy Maples scored on the quarterback keeper. OU went for two and Maples connected with
Isaac Gibson, putting OU within 21-18.
Just one minute later, McPherson responded. White scored on a 67 yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was no good and the Braves trailed 27-18. Ottawa was not able to put the ball into the endzone on its last drive of the game and the Bulldogs took the 27-18 victory.
