2021: Johnston was named AP NAIA Second Team All-American and earned First Team All-KCAC at defensive back. He was also named Honorable Mention All-KCAC as a kick returner. Johnston finished the 2021 season with 28 tackles (17 solo/11 assisted), two forced fumbles, eight interceptions, and four pass break ups. As a kick returner, Johnston had 19 returns for 518 yards, averaged 27.3 yards per return, and returned on kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. He finished the year ranked first in the NAIA in interceptions (8) and seventh in interceptions returned for a touchdown (1). Off the gridiron, Johnston was named to the CoSIDA NAIA Academic All-District 3 First Team.
2020: Johnston earned Second Team All-KCAC honors for his play at defensive back. He finished the year with 47 tackles (30 solo/17 assisted), 2.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, eight pass break ups, one recovered fumble, and one forced fumble. Johnston was ranked 23rd in the NAIA in passes defended per game (1.2) and 27th in total interceptions (3).
2019: Johnston finished the season with 45 tackles (39 solo/6 assisted) and had two interceptions. He had 17 kick off returns for 320 yards for an average of 18.8 yards per return. Johnston averaged 18.8 yards per return.
2018: As a freshman, Johnston had 24 tackles (20 solo/4 assisted). He had one interception and one blocked kick. Johnston finished the season with 12 kickoff returns, averaging 21.5 yards per return. He earned Honorable Mention All-KCAC as a kick returner.
High School: Johnston lettered in football and basketball at Leavenworth High School. He was an Honorable Mention All-Sunflower League selection.
