NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – The Ottawa University football team fell 50-21 to no. 14 Bethel College on Saturday night at Thresher Stadium. The Brave defense forced four Thresher turnovers, two of which resulted in touchdowns for OU.
Bethel struck first, taking a 7-0 lead with 7:31 to go in the first quarter. After an OU punt, the Threshers drove the ball down to the OU six yard line. On third down,
AJ Hemphill forced a fumble. Saamad Ali picked up the ball, returning it 96 yards for the touchdown. That return set a new school record, breaking Deron Bruce's school record of 69 yards that was set against Bethel College on Sept. 27, 2014.
Lewis McMullen's extra point attempt was good and the game was tied 7-7. Bethel answered on its next offensive possession, taking a 14-7 lead over the Braves with 12:20 to go in the second quarter. Ottawa tied the game with its next defensive take away.
Bethel moved the ball to the OU 20 yard line.
Keondre Polanco sacked the BC quarterback, forcing a fumble. He picked up the ball and returned it 74 yards to pay dirt. McMullen's PAT kick was true, tying the game at 14-14 with 7:34 to go in the half.
It was at this point that the Theshers scored 22 points in a little more four minutes. Bethel scored on an offensive touchdown, a blocked punt, and an interception. Those three scores gave BC a 36-14 lead at the half.
It was a scoreless third quarter for both teams. In the fourth, Bethel scored 14 points and OU finished with seven.
Jared Daniels scored the touchdown for the Braves from two yards out, capping a nine play, 75 yard drive and the Threshers took the 50-21 victory.
