Women's Basketball Moves Past Haskell, 88-84

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team won their second straight game, taking an 88-84 victory over Haskell Indian Nations University on Monday evening in Wilson Field House.

The Braves opened the first quarter with an early 6-2 lead over HINU. Haskell chipped away at the Brave lead and led 11-10 with 5:31 to go in the first quarter. The teams exchanged baskets and HINU had a  19-17 lead with 1:27 on clock.

Haskell was able to score the next three points to increase its lead to 22-17 with 34 seconds left in the quarter. Abby Dietsche's jumper in the final seconds of the first cut the Haskell lead and OU trailed 22-19 at the start of the second.

A basket by Dietsche and a 3-pt field goal from Kennedy Bankett tied the game at 24 all in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Free throws by Bankett and a 3-pt field goal by Katelyn Alatini gave OU a 29-24 lead.

Haskell responded with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 29 all with 6:49 left in the half. Ottawa retook the lead on an Alatini three, 32-29. Haskell cut the Brave lead to one, 32-31, but a jumper from Tootie Allen gave the Braves a three point cushion, 34-31.

HINU answered with a 7-0 run and led 38-34 with 4:09 on the clock. Five straight points by the Braves, a three by Alatini and a basket by Nayeli Acosta, gave OU a 39-38 lead at the 3:19 mark in the second quarter. Haskell scored the next basket, retaking the lead 40-39.

The teams exchanged baskets and with 1:21 on the clock, Haskell had a 42-41 lead. Two blocks by Dietsche and a block by Hailey Henry led to a Haskell foul. Bankett went to the line and made both, and OU led 43-42 at the half.

Ottawa started the third quarter on a 14-2 run, taking a 57-44 lead over Haskell with 3:37 on the clock. Haskell rallied, answering with a run of its own and were within 59-56 of the Braves with 56 seconds on the clock. After an OU defensive stop, Alatini connected on a three and the Braves took a 62-56 lead into the final quarter of play.

Baskets by Allen and Bankett to start the fourth gave the Braves a 68-56 lead. Four straight points by Dietsche increased the OU lead to 13 points, 72-59, with 6:50 remaining in the game.

An old fashioned 3-pt play by Bankett pushed OU's lead to 15 points, 77-62. Haskell again rallied. HINU was within 87-80 with 14 seconds on the clock. After an OU turnover, Haskell cut the Ottawa lead to 87-82. Allen was then fouled and when to the line. She made one of two free throws, giving Ottawa an 88-82 lead with five seconds on the clock. Haskell made one more basket as the clock ran out and the Braves took the 88-84 victory.

Ottawa (4-2, 1-1) returns to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 29 in Wilson Field House against Bethel College. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
