Baseball Trips Up Saint Mary, 5-4

OTTAWA, Kan. -  The Ottawa University baseball team won its fifth straight game with a 5-4 win over the University of Saint Mary on Monday afternoon at Alumni Park. OU takes the season series, 3-0, over the Spires. Ottawa is in third place in the KCAC and three games behind first place, Kansas Wesleyan University (24-6).

The Braves broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. Liam Vulcano hit a home run to left field, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead.

Saint Mary tied the game with a home run in the top of the fourth and took its first lead of the game, 2-1, with a home run in the top of the fifth. Ottawa tied the game in its bottom half of the inning.
Brandon Kelley led OU off with a single to left. He stole second, giving OU a runner in scoring position. Tyler Farnham continued to swing a hot bat, hitting a single to center and scoring Kelley to tie the game at 2-2.

The Spires retook the lead with its third home run of the game, 3-2, in the top of the sixth. Ottawa answered in the bottom of the sixth. Jonah Weisner singled to left. Pedro Astacio followed that with a single to left, moving Weisner to third. Lukas Rich singled to right, scoring Weisner to tie the game, 3-3. Robby Williams entered as a pinch hitter, scoring Astacio with a sacrifice fly to center and Ottawa had a 4-3 lead.

Another home run by Saint Mary tied the game, 4-4, in the top of the seventh inning. The tie did not last long as OU retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh.

Vulcano doubled to left and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Farmham. Zachary Spradlin was hit by a pitch and the Braves had runners on the corners. Weisner reached first on an error by the Spire first baseman and Vulcano scored, giving the Braves the 5-4 lead.

Flynn Ridley entered the game in relief in the top of the eighth. Only two Spires reached base in eighth and ninth innings as OU took the 5-4 victory.
