Baseball Survives and Advances with Victory over Friends, 11-10

GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team is moving on in the KCAC Tournament with an 11-10 victory over Friends University on Thursday night at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The game had a 45 minute lightning delay. Friends was up to bat with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning before the game continued at 10:05 p.m.

Ottawa struck first, taking the early lead in the top of the first inning. Cole Broughton was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Zachary Spradlin moved him to second with a single up the middle. Jonah Weisner walked and OU had the bases loaded. Pedro Astacio scored Broughton after being hit by a pitch and OU had a 1-0 lead. Lukas Rich gave the Braves a 2-0 lead with his single to right, scoring Spradlin. Ottawa's final run in the inning came on Nicholas Sizemore's single to center. His hit scored Weisner and the Braves had a 3-0 lead.

That is where the score stayed until the top of the sixth inning. Connor Jeffers bunted safely to first. A wild pitch moved Jeffers to second and a walk by Tyler Farnham gave OU runners on first and second. After a Falcon pitching change, a balk moved Jeffers to third and Farnham to second. Broughton doubled to left field, scoring both Jeffers and Farnham to give OU a 5-0 lead. The Braves scored one more run in the inning on a Rich single to right. His hit scored Broughton to give Ottawa the 7-0 lead.

The Braves pushed four more runs across home plate in the top of the seventh. Liam Vulcano was hit by a pitch, Jeffers walked, and Farnham was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Spradlin walked, scoring Vulcano and Ottawa led 8-0. Jonah Weisner doubled to left, scoring Jeffers and Farnham to increase the OU lead to 10-0. Ottawa's last run of the inning game on a pinch hit single to center by Robby Williams, scoring Spradlin and the Braves had an 11-0 lead.

Then, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, lightning entered the area and the game was delayed for 45 minutes. When the game restarted, Ottawa had to replace KCAC Pitcher of the Year Tyler Bryant in the lineup and without him in there, the Falcon offense came to life.

Friends scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, four in the bottom of the eighth and was within 11-10 of OU with two outs and a runner on third. The last Friends' batter lined out to third baseman, Jonah Weisner, and Ottawa survived and advanced to the next round with the 11-10 victory.
