OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team defeated York University, 99-69, on Saturday afternoon in Wilson Field House. The win was OU's 15
th straight over the Panthers.
Ottawa trailed in the opening minutes of the first quarter. That did not last long as OU put together a 10-0 run to take 16-10 lead on a 3-pt field goal by
Nikole Schnell with 2:23 left in the first. York scored the next four points to cut OU's lead to 16-14. Schnell scored the final basket of the quarter and OU took an 18-14 lead into the second.
Back-to-back 3-pt field goals by
Nayeli Acosta and Katleyn Alatini gave the Braves a 24-14 lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter.
Kennedy Bankett's 3-pt field goal at the 4:43 mark pushed the Brave lead to 38-26. York cut into the OU lead and were within 40-33. Ottawa answered with five straight points by
Jayla Johnson to take a 45-33 lead. York's Imani Honey made two free throws to cut OU's lead to 45-36. Ottawa quickly answered with a
Katelyn Alatini basket to take a 47-35 lead into the locker room.
The Braves came out on fire in the third quarter and at the 4:36 mark, had a 64-42 lead. Ottawa was able to push its lead to 27 points, 75-48, on a basket by
Desiree Marshall-Penny. York made a three at the end of the quarter and OU led 75-51 at the start of the fourth.
Ottawa dominated the final quarter of play. In the first three minutes, OU outscored York 12-2 and led 87-53. The Braves were able to empty its bench in the final minutes of the fourth, taking the 99-69 victory.
