KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team fell 71-64 to Avila University in Mabee Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.
Ottawa scored the first four points of the game to take the early lead. But the Braves went cold from the floor for the remainder of the quarter and it wasn't until the 2:40 mark that a
Nayeli Acosta basket stopped the 18-0 Eagle run.
In the second quarter, Avila was able to increase its lead to 20 points, 37-17. A 3-pt field goal by Acosta cut the deficit to 37-20 with 38 seconds to go in the half. Avila, however, was able to score the final points of the second quarter and took a 39-20 lead into the locker room.
In the third, the Braves were not able to cut into the Avila lead and trailed 59-40 at the start of the fourth.
Ottawa's offense picked up in the fourth, outscoring Avila 24-12. The Braves attempted to rally and cut the deficit to single digits, 70-61, on two
Tiyani Rollins' free throws with 49 seconds left in regulation. Ottawa simply ran out of time and Avila took the 71-64 victory.
