MCPHERSON, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team earned its first conference win on Saturday night, defeating McPherson College 82-66 in Holman Fieldhouse.
The Braves struggled to score for most of the first quarter and trailed 12-8 with 1:56 remaining in the quarter. A three by
Dominique Schutte seemed to flip a switch for OU. Ottawa ended the quarter by outscoring McPherson 9-0, taking a 17-12 lead into the second quarter.
Ottawa pushed its lead to double digits on a basket by
Anna Eldridge, 26-16, with six minutes remaining in the half. The Bulldogs were able to cut OU's lead to seven points, 30-23. A 3-pt field goal from Schutte and a basket by
Tiyani Rollins pushed Ottawa's lead back to double figures, 35-23, with 35 seconds left in the second quarter. OU was unable to take its double figure lead into the locker room. McPherson scored the final basket of the half and the Braves took a 35-26 lead into the locker room.
Ottawa increased its lead back to double digits at the start of the third quarter an led 42-28 on a basket by
Katelyn Alatini, 42-28. McPherson responded with a 10-1 run, cutting OU's lead to five points, 43-38, with 3:32 left in the third quarter. Ottawa answered by holding the Bulldogs to two points in the final 3 minutes of the quarter, taking a 55-40 into the fourth.
The Braves continued with the defensive intensity in the final quarter of play. OU held McPherson to two points in the first 1:38 of the fourth, increasing its lead to 62-42 after an Eldridge basket. Ottawa did not allow McPherson to stage a comeback and the Braves took the 82-66 victory.
