Women's Basketball is Defeated by Emporia State, 89-80

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team was defeated 89-80 by Emporia State University in an exhibition game on Monday afternoon at White Auditorium.

Emporia State led 10-6 at the start of the first quarter. Ottawa cut into the Lady Hornet lead, putting together a 11-2 run to take a 17-12 lead on a Katelyn Alatini three with 3:34 left in the first quarter.
ESU sliced the Brave lead to one point, 17-16. Ottawa's defense held the Lady Hornets to three points in the final 2:38 of the quarter and led 22-19 at the start of the second.

The Lady Hornets scored the first five points of the second quarter, taking a 24-22 lead over OU. Back-to-back threes by Nora Ford and Nayeli Acosta gave OU a 28-24 lead with 7:52 left in the half.
A jumper by Acosta increased the OU lead to 33-27. Emporia State again cut into the Brave lead and with 4:37 remaining in the second quarter, Ottawa had a two point advantage 36-34. The Braves responded by ending the half on a 12-2 run, taking a 48-36 lead into the locker room.

Ottawa struggled to score in the third quarter. OU was outscored 20-8 by Emporia State and the game was tied at 56 apiece at the start of the final quarter of play.

ESU scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to take a 60-56 lead. Two Janiyah Hendricks free throws put OU within 60-58 with 7:48 left in the game. The Lady Hornets were able to put some space between themselves and Ottawa with an18-7 run, taking a 78-65 lead over the Braves with 2:32 remaining in the contest.

The Braves cut the ESU lead to single digits, 78-70, on a 3-pt field goal by Hendricks. The Lady Hornets pushed their lead back double figures. 85-73, with 30 seconds on the clock. Ottawa continued to chip away at the ESU lead and after a three by Ford, Ottawa was down 87-80 with 11 seconds left in the game. OU was forced to foul and ESU's Katie Horyna made both of her free throws and the Lady Hornets took the 89-80 victory.
