OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team finished its three game series against (16) Kansas Wesleyan University with a 14-4 win in eight innings at Alumni Park on Monday afternoon.
Kansas Wesleyan took the early lead in the top of the third inning, 1-0. Ottawa answered in its bottom half of the inning.
Cole Broughton singled to left and then moved to third with a double to center by
Brent Swearingen.
Dylan Garcia scored Broughton on a ground out to second and the game was tied, 1-1.
The Braves took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth. On the first pitch he saw,
Johnny Vulcano hit a home run to left, giving OU a 2-1 lead. Ottawa was not done yet and scored two more runs in the inning.
Tyler Farnham was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. After a KWU pitching change, Broughton doubled to right, scoring Farnham and OU led 3-1. Ottawa scored is final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right by Garcia and OU had a 4-1 lead.
KWU cut into OU's lead with a run in the top of the fifth, 4-2. The Braves earned that run back in the bottom of the fifth.
Blaine Thomas hit an infield single and then moved to second on a throwing error by the Coyote shortstop. Vulcano put the ball in play and the KWU second baseman tried to get Thomas out at third. Thomas was safe and OU had runners on the corners with one out.
Marcellus Pearson, in the game as a pinch hitter, grounded out to third and scored Thomas, giving OU a 5-2 lead.
Ottawa extended its lead over Kansas Wesleyan in the bottom of the sixth. Swearingen stayed hot, singling up the middle.
Dylan Garcia doubled down the left field line, scoring Swearingen and OU led 6-2. Garcia moved 90 feet from home with a wild pitch.
Nicholas Sizemore's ground out to third scored Garcia, giving the Braves a 7-2 lead.
The Braves kept up with the offensive onslaught in the seventh inning. Vulcano hit an infield single to third base. Pearson followed that with a home run to left center and OU had a 9-2 lead. Ottawa increased its lead to 10-4 by taking advantage of a miscue by the KWU third baseman. OU scored one more run in the seventh. Sizmore doubled to left, scored Swearingen and OU had an 11-2 lead.
KWU cut into OU's lead with two runs in the top of the eighth, 11-4. The Braves answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, ending the game.
Blaine Thomas walked and
Liam Vulcano singled to center.
Johnny Vulcano hit his second home run of the day, a shot over the left field fence and OU took the game, 14-4.
