Baseball Upends Southwestern, 12-4

WINFIELD, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team won its second straight game, defeating Southwestern College 12-4 at the Broadway Sports Complex on Friday afternoon. For the fourth straight game, the OU offense had 10 or more hits. Ottawa finished with 16 hits, a season high.

Ottawa took the lead in the top of the first inning. Cole Broughton doubled to left center. Jackson Alaniz hit his first home run of the season, scoring Broughton and OU led 2-0.

Southwestern cut into the OU lead with a run in the bottom of the first, 2-1. After a scoreless second inning, the Moundbuilders took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third, 3-2.

The Braves answered with a run in the top of the fourth. Blaine Thomas led off the inning for OU with a double to left center. Cole Broughton's single to left scored Thomas and the game was tied 3-3.

The Moundbuilders retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, 4-3. The Braves tied the game in the top of the fifth. Johnny Vulcano hit his fourth home run of the season to tie the game 4-4.
In the top of the sixth, Ottawa broke open the game. OU received back-to-back-to-back home runs from Vulcano, Thomas, and Trey McClellan, finished the sixth with eight runs and taking a 12-4 lead over Southwestern.

Ottawa shut down the Moundbuilder offense in their final four at bats. OU only allowing three Moundbuilders to reach base for the remainder of the game as OU took the 12-4 victory.

  • Jackson Alaniz had three hits in six at bats, scoring one run and driving in two.
  • Johnny Vulcano's two hits were home runs. He led OU with five RBI. The last time a Brave had five RBI was on April 8, 2023 when Nicholas Sizemore had five against McPherson College.
  • Jurgen Zwitzer pitched 3.1 innings, striking out four.
  • Cameron Sistrunk earned the win, striking out four in 3.2 innings.
  • Tim Burke pitched the eighth and ninth, striking out three.
