Baseball Shuts Down McPherson, 7-0

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team took a 2-0 series lead over McPherson College with a 7-0 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Park.

Ottawa broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning. Blaine Thomas walked and swiped second. Tyler Farnham's single to center scored Thomas and OU led 1-0.

The Braves extended their lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Donnie Rhyne, pinch hitting for Anthony Soria, was hit by a pitch and Thomas walked. A double steal put both Braves in scoring position. A balk scored Soria, who re-entered the game, giving OU a 2-0 lead. Farnham's sacrifice fly to right scored Thomas and Ottawa had a 3-0 lead. Cole Broughton doubled to right center. Brent Swearingen's single up the middle scored Broughton, giving the Braves a 4-0 lead.

Ottawa pushed three more runs across home plate in the bottom of the eighth. Nicholas Sizemore doubled to left center and Jaquavius Davis entered the game as a courtesy runner. Marcellus Pearson doubled to left, scoring Davis to give OU a 5-0 lead. Soria followed that with a single to left, moving Pearson to third. Thomas' single to right scored Pearson to give Ottawa a 6-0 lead. Thomas advanced to third on a throwing error by the MC pitcher. A wild pitch then scored Thomas and Ottawa led 7-0.

The Bulldogs had two reach base in the top of the ninth but Fawster Voytko earned a strike out and a ground out, giving OU the 7-0 victory.

  • Ryan Olchoway pitched for the first time this season, starting the game. He pitched three innings, struck out three, and only allowing one hit.
  • Flynn Ridley pitched four innings, earning the win. He struck out five and did not allow a hit.
