Baseball Bests Evangel, 6-5

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Ottawa University baseball team won its third straight game, defeating Evangel University 6-5 on Friday afternoon.

Jeremy Freeman, Jr. continued to his hot hitting, leading off the game with a triple to center. Dylan Garcia's sacrifice fly to center scored Freeman and OU led 1-0.

The Braves increased their lead in the top of the second inning. Nicholas Sizemore doubled down the left field line, bringing in Liam Vulcano as a courtesy runner. Anthony Soria sacrificed Vulcano to third and Tyler Farnham scored him with a single, giving the Braves a 2-0 lead. Farnham moved into scoring position, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Cole Broughton's single to center scored Freeman and the Braves had a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Ottawa extended its lead over the Valor. Brent Swearingen was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a ground out by Sizemore. Marcellus Pearson's pinch hit triple scored Swearingen and Ottawa led 4-0.

Evangel cut into the Brave lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, 4-3. The Braves earned one of those runs back in the top of the seventh.

Freeman singled and advanced to second on a Garcia walk. Johnny Vulcano singled, scoring Freeman and the Braves had a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the eighth, the Braves pushed another run across home plate. Pearson reached first on an error by the EU short stop. Farnham walked and OU had runners on first and second. Freeman's fly out moved Pearson to third. Broughton singled, scoring Pearson and OU had a 6-3 lead.

The Valor scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, cutting the OU lead to 6-5. In the ninth, it was three up and three down for Ottawa's defense and the Braves took the 6-5 victory.
