Baseball Completes Sweep of Bethany

LINDSBORG, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team completed its sweep of Bethany College on Saturday afternoon at Phillip Anderson Field. The Braves won both games of the double header, taking game one 4-3 and game two, 7-0.

Game One
Ottawa broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. Tyler Farnham was hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a passed ball. Cole Broughton walked, giving OU runners on first and second. Both players moved up 90 feet with a double steal. A sacrifice fly by Blaine Thomas scored Farnham and OU led 1-0.

The Swedes answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead over the Braves. Ottawa answered with two runs of its own in the top of the fourth.

Walks by Jackson Alaniz and Liam Vulcano put two on base for the Braves. Anthony Soria's double to left scored both Alaniz and Vulcano, giving OU a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Braves increased their lead over the Swedes. Broughton singled to left and then moved to third on an error by the BC left fielder. Thomas scored Broughton with a ground out and Ottawa had a 4-2 lead.

Bethany tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth. The Swedes scored a run to cut OU's lead to 4-3. Fawster Voytko entered the game with two on and one out. A Swede was picked off and Voytko was able to get the ground out to short for the final out, securing the 4-3 victory for OU.

Inside the Box Score Game Two
After a scoreless first three innings of play, Ottawa scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Jackson Alaniz singled to right and Jacquavius Davis entered the game as a courtesy runner. He moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a ground out by Marcellus Pearson. Nicholas Sizemore, pinch hitting for Trey McClellan, scored Davis with an infield single and OU led 1-0. Liam Vulcano hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Sizemore and Ottawa had a 2-0 lead.

The Braves increased their lead over the Swedes in the top of the fifth. Back to back singles by Alaniz and Cole Broughton led to a Bethany pitching change. Blaine Thomas walked, loading the bases for OU. Tyler Farnham's sacrifice fly to enter scored Alaniz, giving Ottawa a 3-0 lead.

OU loaded the bases once more after Pearson was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch scored Broughton, increasing the OU lead to 4-0. A sacrifice bunt by Sizemore scored Thomas to give the Braves a 5-0 lead. Ottawa scored its last run of the inning on a single to right by Pedro Astacio. His hit scored Pearson and OU led 6-0.

The Braves pushed one more run across home plate in the top of the sixth. Alaniz hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Farnham and OU took the lead and the game, 7-0.

The Braves (27-20, 20-13) return to the diamond to finish the regular season on Friday, April 26 against Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
