Women's Flag Football Downs Midland, Braves to Play KWU in the KCAC Championship Game

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. – The Ottawa University women's flag football team is moving on to the KCAC Tournament Championship Game after taking a 38-13 victory in the semifinals over Midland University on Saturday afternoon.

Ottawa deferred to the second half and Midland received the ball to start the game. The Warriors completed a 32 yard pass play, ending up on the Brave one yard line after Cynthia Homs made a flag pull at the OU one yard line. The OU defense held, forcing a turnover on downs and the Ottawa offense took over.  

The Braves were not able to move out of the shadow of its end zone and was forced to punt. Midland took over on its own 25 yard line. The Brave defense came away with the take away. Jukanie Washington broke up the pass and Homs intercepted the pass, giving OU's offense the ball on its own 35 yard line.

OU took advantage of the turnover, putting together a three play scoring drive. Carrera connected with Jazlyn Camacho for the touchdown. The extra point was no good and OU had a 6-0 lead with 1:42 left in the first quarter.

The Brave defense forced a second straight Warrior turnover with a second straight interception by Homs. She returned to the ball to the OU 21 yard line and the Braves had the ball with 8:50 remaining in the first half.

Two plays later, the Braves were back in the end zone. Carrera connected on a 47 yard touchdown pass to Alyssa Linkous. The extra point was no good and the Braves had a 12-0 lead at the 8:05 mark in the second quarter.

The OU defense forced a third straight interception by the Warriors. Abby Brown recorded a pick six. The extra point attempt was good and OU led 19-0 with 7:17 left in the first half.

On the Warriors' next offensive possession, Ottawa forced a punt attempt. The snap was bad and OU took over on the MU 31 yard line. The Brave offense responded by putting together a seven play, 31 yard scoring drive. Carrera and Linkous connected for the second time in the game and with 1:38 left in the half, Ottawa had a 25-0 lead.

Another defensive stop by the Ottawa defense gave OU the ball on the Warriors 37 yards line with 31 seconds on the clock. Carrera found Linkous in the end zone for the third time in the game and the Braves took a 31-0 lead into the locker room.

OU didn't waste anytime finding the end zone to start the second half. The Braves put together a nine play, 66 yard scoring drive that ended on a 15 yard touchdown pass from Carrera to Mandolyn Scalisi. The extra point attempt was good and with 6:40 left in the third, Ottawa led 38-0.

After turnovers by both teams, Midland had the ball on its own 24 yard line with 1:38 left in the third and was able to put together its first scoring drive of the game.

Angel Ioane Kaio threw a 14 yard touchdown pass to Olivia Dominguez-Millsop. The extra point attempt was good and OU led 38-7.

Ottawa's offense moved the ball to the Midland 10 yard with a little more than six minutes left in the game. The Braves were not able to score and turned the ball over on downs. The Warriors  answered with its second straight scoring drive and with 33 seconds left in the game cut OU's lead to 38-13.

Ottawa ran out the clock on its final offensive possession of the game, taking the 38-13 victory.

Ottawa (12-4) returns to the gridiron on Sunday, April 21 to play Kansas Wesleyan University in the KCAC Tournament Championship Game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
