OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University football team was defeated 27-14 by (16) Evangel University on Saturday afternoon at AdventHealth Field.
Evangel struck first, taking advantage of a turnover by the Braves, with 11:31 to go in the second quarter. Ottawa was driving to score but fumbled the ball and the Valor took over on their own 26 yard line. EU crossed the goal line 10 plays later on an Eric Williams three yard touchdown run. The Jonah Edwards extra point kick was good and the Valor led 7-0.
The teams exchanged punts and EU took over with 1:10 left in the half on its own 49 yard line. The Valor moved the ball to the OU six yard line and with five seconds on the clock attempted a 23 yard field goal. The kick by Edwards was good and Evangel took a 10-0 lead into the locker room.
Ottawa received the ball to start the second half and cut into the Evangel lead with a seven play, 70 yard scoring drive. The drive ended with a
Taylor Eggers 11 yard touchdown pass to
Hagan Johnson.
Rhett Andersen's extra point kick was good and the Braves were within three of the Valor, 10-7 with 10:58 left in the third quarter.
The OU defense held on the Valor's first offensive possession of the second half and the Brave special teams gave the Ottawa offense excellent field position.
Rowdy Keith blocked the EU punt and OU took over on the Evangel 29 yard line.
The Ottawa offense was not able to take advantage of the blocked punt and Andersen attempted a 46 yard field goal. The attempt was blocked and Evangel took over on its own 29 yard line. The Brave defense forced a Valor put and the OU offense took over on its own 30 yard line.
The Braves, however, turned the ball over on an interception and the Valor offense took advantage of their opportunity. Two plays later, EU scored on a four yard Eric Williams run. The extra point was good and with 5:01 left in the third quarter, Evangel led 17-7.
Ottawa was forced to punt on its next offensive possession, but the OU special teams were able to pin Evangel on its own two yard line on a 63 yard punt by Andersen. Evangel answered with a nine play, 98 yards scoring drive that ended in a 42 yard touchdown run by Williams. The extra point split the uprights and Evangel led 24-7 with 13:33 left in the fourth quarter.
The Braves were able to cut into the Valor lead on its next offensive possession. Eggers ran the ball in from one yard out and after the Andersen extra point, OU with within 10 points, 24-14, with 10:40 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Interceptions ended OU's next two offensive possessions and with 3:06 on the clock. The Valor's drive stalled on the OU 25 yard line and Edwards attempted a 38 yard field goal. It was good and the Valor took the lead and the game 27-14.

- Ottawa finished the game with 342 yards of offense, 242 yards passing and 100 yards rushing. Evangel had 179 yards rushing and 142 yards passing for 321 yards of offense.
- Taylor Eggers was 22-for-45 through the air for 242 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. He also led OU in rushing with 44 yards and scored a touchdown.
- Keavian Long and De'Anthony Curtis led the Braves with eight receptions apiece. Long had 98 receiving yards and Curtis finished with 91. Hagan Johnson had a receiving touchdown.
- AJ Hemphill led the Braves with 14 tackles, and Jaelin Hines and Brandon Doles had six tackles apiece.

Ottawa (0-5) returns to the field on Saturday, Oct. 5 against Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
