Women's Basketball Falls Short to Tabor, 70-62

HILLSBORO, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team lost its sixth straight game, falling 70-62 to Tabor College in Tabor Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The first quarter went back and forth with the Braves taking a one point lead, 15-14, into the second. After three ties and two lead changes at the start of the second, Ottawa led 25-23 after two Nora Ford free throws.

Tabor retook the lead, 27-25 with 3:45 left in the half but a 3-pt field goal by Abbie Sextro gave the Braves a 28-27 edge over the Bluejays. TC scored the next four points and led 31-28 with 47 seconds on the clock. Ottawa turned the ball over on its next offensive possession but a steal by Dominique Schutte gave OU back the ball with eight seconds on the clock. Ford nailed the jumper as time expired and Ottawa trailed 31-30 at the half.

Ottawa retook the lead in the opening seconds of the third quarter on a three by Schutte, 33-31. The teams continued to exchange baskets. A Tiyani Rollins field goal with 2:28 on the clock tied the game for the eighth time, 44-44.

Another 3-pt field goal by Schutte gave the Braves a 47-44 lead. Tabor's basket with 1:08 left in the third cut OU's lead to 47-46. Janiyah Hendrick was able to hit a jumper with eight seconds on the clock, giving OU a 49-46 lead at the start of the fourth.  

The Braves pushed its lead to seven points at the start of the fourth, taking a 58-51 lead over Tabor on a Hendricks basket with 6:24 left in regulation. The Bluejays responded with a 13-3 run, taking a 64-61 lead over the Braves with 1:32 on the clock.

Ottawa cut into the deficit with two Anna Eldridge free throws, 62-64. The Braves were not able to get a defensive stop and Tabor scored on its next offensive possession to take a 66-62 lead with 47 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

OU was forced to foul. The Bluejays were 4-for-6 in the final 40 seconds of the game, taking the 70-62 victory.

  • OU had three players in double figures led by Abbie Sextro's 17 points. She was one rebound away from a double-double, finishing with a team high nine rebounds.
  • Janiyah Hendricks had 15 points and two steals.
  • Dominique Schutte finished the game with 11 points.
