ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Ottawa University men's volleyball team defeated the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis 3-1; 25-21, 18-25, 29-27, 25-22; on Friday night. The win was OU's first over UHSP.
Nazmi Bayoglu added his name to the OU record book. His 19 digs are 10
th in the OU record book in single match digs and are tied for third for digs in a four set match.
How it Happened
- The start of set one went back and forth. But with the set tied 13-13, Ottawa reeled off five straight points, taking an 18-13 lead on a kill by Marko Zolnjan. UHSP did not go away and rallied to get within 23-21. Ottawa closed out the set on the next two points. A kill by Leo Betin gave OU a 24-21 lead and the Braves took the set 25-21 on a block by Quentin Le Dortz and Macort Pickup.
- Ottawa had the early 6-4 lead in set two. The Eutectics went on a 6-1 run, taking a 10-7 lead over the Braves. The Braves were not able to rally and UHSP took the 25-18 victory.
- OU trailed for most of set three. But after being down 19-18, Ottawa scored three straight points to take a 21-19 lead on a Betin kill. After a Eutectics timeout, UHSP rallied and took a 23-22 lead over the Braves. The teams exchanged points and after a kill by Zolnjan, the set was tied, 24-24. The teams exchanged points once more and UHSP took a 27-26 lead over the Braves. That was the Eutectics' last lead. Ottawa ended the set by scoring the next three points to take the victory. A Horia Filpisan kill tied the set, 27-27. Ottawa retook the lead on a kill by Betin, 28-27, and OU won the set on a block by Betin and Kadeem Morris, 29-27.
- Blocks by Le Dortz/Petar Lazic and Akeil Williams/Lazic gave the Braves a 5-2 lead over UHSP in set four. The Eutectics rallied, putting together a 5-0 run to take a 7-5 lead over OU. Ottawa put together of run of their own, 5-1, taking a 10-8 lead on a kill by Betin. UHSP rallied and retook the lead, 18-17. Ottawa scored the next four points, taking a 21-18 lead on a block by Morris and Filpisan. UHSP tried to stage a comeback and cut OU's lead to 23-22. Ottawa finished the set and the match by scoring the next two points. Ottawa took a 24-22 lead on a UHSP service error. A block by Williams gave the Braves the victory, 25-22.
