Baseball Sweeps Avila

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team completed the series sweep of Avila University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Park. Ottawa took game one of the double header, 9-4, and won game two, 5-4, on a walk-off home run by Cole Broughton.

Game One
Avila scored three runs in the top of the first to take the early lead. Ottawa cut into the Eagle lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Julius Ryan reached first on a walk and then moved to second on a single to center by Anthony Soria. Ryan swiped third, giving OU a base runner 90 feet from home. Jeremy Freeman, Jr.'s sacrifice fly to center scored Ryan and Ottawa trailed 3-1. Ottawa scored one more run on Brian Parry's single to center. His hit scored Soria and the Braves were down 3-2.

In the top of the seventh, Avila was able to increase its lead to 4-2. Ottawa answered by tying the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Avila started off the bottom of the seventh with a pitching change. Ryan was hit by a pitch and Soria walked. Freeman's ground out moved both Ryan and Soria into scoring position. Parry scored both Ryan and Soria with a single to left and the game was tied 4-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Braves took their first lead of the game. OU scored all five of its runs with two outs. Jaquavius Davis singled to right and then swiped second. On a 2-2 count, Ryan hit a home run and the Braves had a 6-4 lead. Soria singled and Shaun Gomez, Jr., pinch hitting, walked. Soria and Freeman, who re-entered the game for Gomez, stole third and second. Parry came through in the clutch again, scoring both Soria and Freeman with a single to center and the Braves had an 8-4 lead. Ottawa scored one more run in the inning. Dylan Garcia doubled to right, scoring Parry and OU had a 9-4 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Avila had two base runners on but two straight strike outs by Cameron Sistrunk ended the scoring threat and OU took the 9-4 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game Two
Avila struck first, taking a 2-0 lead over the Braves. Ottawa tied the game in the bottom of the second.

Julius Ryan doubled to right and moved to third on an infield single by Anthony Soria. Jeremy Freeman, Jr.'s single to right scored Ryan and OU was down 2-1. Soria moved to third on Freeman's hit and then scored on a miscue by the Eagles and the game was tied 2-2.

In the bottom of the third, Ottawa took the lead. Nicholas Sizemore reached first on a walk and Donald Rhyne entered the game as a courtesy runner. Jackson Alaniz singled to left, moving Rhyne into scoring position. Jaquavius Davis advanced Rhyne to third with a fielder's choice to the shortstop and Alaniz was out at second. Ryan's sacrifice fly to left scored Rhyne and the Braves had a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth Ottawa increased its lead. On a 0-0 count, Sizemore hit a home run over the left field fence and the Braves led 4-2. Avila rallied in the top of the sixth, tying the game at four all.

The Braves did not allow Avila to score in the top of the seventh, giving OU a chance for a walk off. Cole Broughton did just that. One a 1-0 count he sent the ball over the left field fence and the Braves took the 5-4 victory.

Ottawa (16-3) returns to the diamond on Monday, March 3 in a non-conference game against Missouri Valley College at Alumni Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
