(21) Baseball Takes Game One Against Evangel, 18-4

OTTAWA, Kan. – The (21) Ottawa University baseball team opened its three game series against Evangel University with an 18-4 victory at Alumni Park.

The Braves took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Shaun Gomez, Jr. hit his seventh home run of the season, giving OU a 1-0 lead.

Evangel tied the game with a run in the top of the third, 1-1. Ottawa answered in its bottom half of the inning.

Dylan Garcia led OU off with a single to right field. Cole Broughton was hit by a pitch and Gomez walked, loading the bases for the Braves. Jackson Alaniz scored Garcia and Broughton with a double to left center and OU retook the lead 3-1. Jaquavius Davis singled to center, scoring Gomez to increase the Ottawa lead to 4-1. Nicholas Sizemore followed that hit with a single to left center, scoring both Alaniz and Davis to give Ottawa a 6-1 lead.

Ottawa increased its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Garcia led things off with his seventh home run of the season and the Braves lead 7-1. Broughton singled up the middle and then stole second. Gomez was hit by a pitch giving OU two one with no outs. Alaniz scored Broughton with a double to left-center, pushing the Brave lead to 8-1. The Braves loaded the bases with an Anthony Soria walk. Davis walked, scoring Gomez to give OU a 9-1 lead. Nicholas Sizemore cleared the bases with a grand slam, his second in an OU uniform and the program's 19th overall, and OU led 13-1.

The Braves were able to push five runs across home plate in the bottom of the fifth inning. Back-to-back walks by Gomez and Alaniz gave OU runners on first and second. Soria singled to right, loading the bases for the Braves. A wild pitch scored Gomez and Ottawa led 14-3. Alaniz scored on a Valor miscue, giving Ottawa a 15-3 lead. Branden Franz singled to left, scoring Soria and Davis and the Braves had a 17-3 lead. OU scored its final run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right by Garcia and the Braves led 18-3.

Evangel cut into the Brave lead with a run in the top of the sixth inning, 18-4. Ottawa held the Valor scoreless in the top of the seventh, taking the 18-4 victory.
