(22) Baseball Sweeps Sterling

STERLING, Kan. – The (22) Ottawa University baseball team completed its sweep of Sterling College on Saturday. The Braves defeated the Warriors 10-3 in game one of the double header and 5-2 in game two. OU has won eight straight games.

Game One
Ottawa took the lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Dylan Garcia singled to left field. Cole Broughton walked and the Braves had runners on first and second. Nicholas Sizemore's single to left scored Garcia, giving OU the 1-0 lead.

The Warriors answered with a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game, 1-1. Ottawa retook the lead in the top of the second, scoring with two outs.

Brian Parry reached first on an error by the Warrior third baseman. He then stole second. Julius Ryan reached first on a walk. Garcia hit a single to right, scoring Parry to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. Cole Broughton followed that up with a single of his own, scoring Ryan and OU had a 3-1 lead.

Sterling again cut into the Brave lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the second to get within 3-2.

In the top of the third inning, the OU offense exploded for six runs to break open the game. Jaquavius Davis singled to center and then stole second. Athony Soria was hit by a pitch and Jeremy Freeman, Jr. walked, loading the bases for Ottawa.

Parry doubled to center, scoring Davis and Soria to give Ottawa the 5-2 lead. OU increased its lead on a single to left by Ryan. His hit scored Freeman and Parry, giving the Braves a 7-2 lead. Cole Broughton scored the final two runs of the inning for the Braves. He hit a home run, scoring Ryan and OU led 9-2. It was Broughton's fourth straight game with a home run.

Sterling scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, cutting OU's lead to 9-3. After a scoreless fifth, the Braves pushed one more run across home plate in the top of the sixth. Broughton doubled to left-center. He scored on a miscue by the Warrior shortstop and Ottawa took the lead and the game 10-3.

Inside the Box Score Game Two
Ottawa broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. Jeremy Freeman, Jr. doubled to left and then scored on a ground out by Julius Ryan to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.

That is where the score stayed until the top of the seventh inning. Jaquavius Davis singled up the middle. Anthony Soria tripled to right, scoring Davis and OU had a 2-0 lead.

Freeman's sacrifice fly to center scored Soria, giving the Braves a 3-0 lead. Cole Broughton scored the final two runs of the inning. He singled, scoring Parry and Ryan to give Ottawa the 5-0 lead.

Sterling tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. The Warriors pushed two runs across home plate and had the bases loaded with no one out. Flynn Ridley struck out the next two and got the ground out to end the inning, giving OU the 5-2 victory.

  • Fawster Voytko pitched six innings in the win. He only allowed one hit and struck out 10.
