Football Upends Saint Mary, 35-27

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University Braves earned their first win of the season with a 35-27 victory over the University of Saint Mary Spires on Saturday afternoon at AdventHealth Field.
After a scoreless first quarter, both offenses came alive in the second. Ottawa struck first when quarterback Luke Edwards capped a nine-play, 65-yard drive with a 14-yard rushing touchdown. Saint Mary answered immediately as Kameron Smith broke free for a 67-yard score to tie the game. Later in the quarter, Malakai Hudson punched in a one-yard run to put Ottawa back in front, but the Spires tied it just before halftime on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Erick Covington to Michael Gazzana, sending the teams into the break knotted at 14.
The Braves regained the lead in the third quarter with a 23-yard field goal from Ike Pringle, then extended it early in the fourth with another Pringle kick from 27 yards. Saint Mary responded in explosive fashion, as Covington hit Gazzana for a 75-yard touchdown to briefly give the Spires a 21-20 advantage. Ottawa answered just 11 seconds later when Edwards connected with De'Anthony Curtis for a 65-yard touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion to reclaim the lead at 28-21.
The Braves' defense came up big on the following series, forcing a fumble that set up a short field. Anthony Powell capped the drive with a 7-yard rushing touchdown, extending Ottawa's lead to 35-21. The Spires made one last push, as Covington found Delvin Lewis from 27 yards out with under two minutes remaining, but the two-point attempt failed, sealing Ottawa's 35-27 victory.
