San Diego Mesa College: Spates earned two letters on the football field at SDMC. As a sophomore, he played in 10 games and finished with 29 tackles and one fumble recovery. Spates had a season high seven tackles against San Berardino. In his freshman season, he played in eight games and finished with 36 tackles and three interceptions to earn Second Team All-Conference honors. Spates had a career high 13 tackles and recorded his first career interception versus Glendale.

High School: Spates earned four letters in football and basketball for Lincoln High School. He also earned two letters in baseball for the Hornets. He helped LHS to two staight CIF Football Championships. Spates was selected to play in the 2012 Opanos Classic All-Star Football Game. He earned First Team All-Conference honors on the football field as a defensive back. Spates also participated in the 2012 Bass Pro Tournament of Champions.
