LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The (13) Ottawa University baseball team won its 16
th straight game, taking an 11-4 victory over the University of Saint Mary at USM Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon. OU has a three game lead over McPherson College with three games remaining. The win over USM clinches the Braves at least a share of its first KCAC Championship since 2010.
Ottawa took the early lead in the top of the first inning.
Jonah Weisner doubled and then moved to third on a single by
Tyler Farnham.
Holland Boan scored Weisner with a sacrifice fly to right and OU led 1-0. The Braves extended their lead on a steal of home by Farnham, giving Ottawa a 2-0 lead.
Saint Mary rallied in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. The Spires scored two runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead over OU.
After a scoreless fifth, Ottawa retook the lead in the top of the sixth. Weisner and Farnham led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Boan loaded the bases with a walk.
Connor Jeffers took advantage of runners in scoring position and singled to left. His hit scored Weisner and Farnham to tie the game at 4-4.
The Spires made a call to the bull pen but that didn't slow down Ottawa.
Nicholas Sizemore sacrificed Boan to third and Jeffers to second. A passed ball scored Boan, giving the Braves a 5-4 lead.
Luis DeLeon pushed the Brave lead to 7-4 with home run, scoring Jeffers.
Logan Zozaya followed that with a home run of his own and Ottawa led 8-4.
Ottawa extended its lead over the Spires in the top of the seventh. Farnham reached first on an error by the USM pitcher. He swiped second and moved to third on a ground out to second by Boan. Farmham was able to score on an error by the Spire catcher to give OU a 9-4 lead. That error moved Jeffers, who reached first on a walk, to third.
Nicholas Sizemore's double scored Jeffers and Ottawa led 10-4.
The Braves scored one more run in the top of the ninth. Farnham singled and then stole second and third. Jeffers hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Farnham and the Braves took the lead and the game 11-4.
