KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Ottawa University football team defeated Avila University, 42-14, at The Z on Saturday afternoon. It was OU's first program victory over the Eagles. Ottawa's 436 yards on the ground ranks fourth in the OU record book in single game rushing.
Wynton Ruth also put his name in the Brave record book. He rushed for 268 yards on 26 carries which ranks him third all-time behind Derrick Ward (315) and Alonzo Smith (278). Ottawa is now on a four game winning streak, its first four game winning streak since 2015.
For the fifth straight game, Ottawa scored on its first possession of the contest. OU put together a seven play, 65 yard drive that ended in a 22 yard
Wynton Ruth touchdown.
Rhett Andersen's extra points kick was good and with 12:03 left in the first quarter, Ottawa led 7-0.
The Eagles scored their first points of the game with 5:45 left in the first quarter. Eli Williams threw a 46 yard touchdown pass to Jordan Cummings. The extra point kick was no good and the Braves led 7-6.
Ottawa extended its lead over Avila at the start of the second quarter. Ruth scored his second touchdown of the game, this one from seven yards out. Andersen's PAT kick split the uprights and the Braves had a 14-6 lead. With 14:30 left in the first half.
After an exchange of punts, the Braves took over with 7:55 on the clock in the second quarter. Ruth crossed the goal line on the fifth play of the drive, scoring from 25 yards out. Andersen's PAT kick was good and with 5:21 on the clock, Ottawa led 21-6.
On Avila's next offensive possession of the game, the Eagle were able to cut into OU's lead. AU put together an 11 play, 75 yard drive that took 5:10. Jahkese Watkins scored from one yard out. The Eagles went for two. Williams completed a pass to Jalen Thach and the Braves had a 21-14 lead at the half.
Avila received the ball to start the second half. Five plays into its drive the OU defense forced a fumble.
Tony Davis recovered it at the Brave 10 yard line. Eight straight running plays later, Ottawa found the endzone.
Billy Maples scored from one yard out. The Andersen extra point kick was good and the Braves led 28-14 with 9:17 left in the third quarter.
The Eagles second offensive possession of the second half ended with the ball going over the head of the punter and Ottawa took over on the AU 13 yard line. OU, however, was not able to cash in on the good field position. The 23 yard field goal attempt by Andersen was no good and Avila took over on its own 20 yard line.
The OU defense forced an Eagle punt and the Braves took the ball into the fourth quarter with the 14 point lead. On the 12
th play of the drive, Ruth scored his fourth touchdown of the day. Andersen's extra point kick was good and with 12:27 left in the game, Ottawa led 35-14.
Ottawa's defense forced a turnover on downs and OU's offense took over on its own 28 yard line with 9:10 on the clock. The Braves ran 7:51 off the clock, scoring with 1:19 left in the game on a one yard run from
Derrick Curtis.
Trevor Bywater's extra point kick was good and Ottawa led 42-14.
The Eagles drove the ball down the field in the final minute of the game and had fourth and goal from the OU seven with five seconds on the clock. Williams attempted a pass that was knocked away by Christian Obreg and Ottawa took the 42-14 victory.

- The Braves finished the game with 483 yards of offense, 436 on the ground and 47 yards through the air. The OU defense held Avila to 79 yards rushing and 187 yards passing for a total of 266 yards of offense.
- Billy Maples went 5-for-10 through the air for 47 yards. He rushed for 31 yards and one touchdown.
- Wynton Ruth rushed for 268 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 10.3 yards per carry. It is his fourth consecutive 100 yard rushing game. Malaki Peko ran for 102 yards on 16 carries. He has now rushed for over 100 or more yards in two out of his last three games.
- Jayden Johnson and Amartrell Churchwell had two receptions apiece. Johnson led the Braves with 37 yards receiving.
- Preston Greenwood led the Braves with 11 tackles.
- AJ Hemphill had seven tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss.
- Jensen Riffel and Saamad Ali finished with six tackles apiece.

Ottawa (5-4, 3-0) returns the field on Saturday, Nov. 4 against Kansas Wesleyan University at AdventHealth Field. Kick off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
