Joshua Portillo Named Assistant Women's Wrestling Coach

OTTAWA, Kan. – Ottawa University women's wrestling head coach, Dalton Weidl, is pleased to announce the hiring of Joshua Portillo as the program's new assistant coach.

"We are super excited to have Joshua joining us at Ottawa University," said Coach Weidl. "Coach Portillo's passion for the sport of wrestling and knowledge will help make an immediate impact with our athletes and program. Excited to have him with us and can't wait to see this program continue to grow as a whole."

Before joining Ottawa, Portillo worked as a wrestling instructor/camp counselor at many camps around the country. He taught different techniques to wrestlers and handled operations for the camps. Portillo is also a Certified Mindset Coach, in which he mentors athletes to maximize their potential and helps upgrade student-athletes' mental health.

"I am thrilled to join the coaching staff at Ottawa University and blessed for this opportunity," said Joshua Portillo. "This program is trending in the right direction, and I am eager to jump on board with what Coach Weidl is creating. I cannot wait to help these young women maximize their potential."

Portillo graduated from the University of Nebraska-Kearney and had an impressive career on the mat for the Lopers. He was a five-time NCAA qualifier, a four-time NCAA All-American, a two-time NCAA Finalist, and the NCAA DII Tech Fall leader (given to the highest scorer in (NCAA DII). Portillo earned the NCAA Elite 90 award twice, which is awarded to the athlete with the highest GPA at each NCAA Tournament and also won the Loper Wrestling Style award, which is awarded to the athlete who coaches believe epitomizes "The Team". He won substantial recognition in the MIAA conference by earning scholar-athlete for four years and was a two time MIAA First Team performer.
