Braves Down Sterling

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team took two games from Sterling College on Friday afternoon at Alumni Park. The Braves won game one, 8-1 and took game two, 4-1.

Game One
Ottawa struck first, taking the lead on Sterling in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Cole Broughton doubled to right. Brandon Kelley singled to right-center, scoring Broughton to give OU a 1-0 lead. Nicholas Sizemore reached first on a walk, bringing in Alex Kuhn as a courtesy runner and Ottawa two runners on base. Robby Williams scored both Kelley and Kuhn with a single to left and OU had a 3-0 lead.

The Braves extended its lead over the Warriors with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Pedro Astacio hit his second home run of the season, giving the Braves a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth Ottawa increased its lead over Sterling. With two on, Astacio hit his second straight home run and OU had a 7-0 lead.

OU scored one more run in the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. With Kelley on third, Robby Williams hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Kelley to give Ottawa an 8-0 lead.

Sterling scored one run in the top of the ninth on a home run by Aaron Johnson. But Tyler Bryant closed the door on the Warriors and the Braves took the 8-1 victory.

  • Brandon Kelley was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in another.
  • Pedro Astacio led OU with four RBI on two home runs.
  • Robby Williams finished with three RBI.
  • Tyler Bryant earned his fourth win of the season, striking out eight in nine innings.
Game Two
The Braves took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Pedro Astacio reached first after being hit by a pitch. A single to left by Liam Vulcano moved Astacio to second. Zachary Spradlin's single to right scored Astacio to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth the Braves increased its lead. With a runner on, Pedro Astacio hit a home run to center on a 2-2 count to give Ottawa a 3-0 lead.

Sterling cut into the Brave lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning, 3-1. Ottawa earned that run back in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Cole Broughton was hit by a pitch. Gabe Eckstaine scored, and the Braves took the lead and the game, 4-1.

  • Pedro Astacio went 2-for-2 at the plate, scoring two runs and finishing with two RBI.
  • Flynn Ridley pitched four innings in the win, striking out seven.
  • Caden Gray eared the save, pitching three innings and striking out five.
