OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team won its fourth straight game with an 11-5 victory over the University of Saint Mary at Alumni Park on Tuesday afternoon.
The Spires struck first, scoring two in the top of the first and one in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Ottawa answered in the bottom of the second.
Robby Williams singled to center and
Pedro Astacio was hit by a pitch to give OU runners on first and second.
Liam Vulcano singled to center, scoring Williams to cut the Spire lead to 3-1.
Connor Jeffers walked, loading the bases for the Braves.
Jonah Weisner's sacrifice fly to center scored Astacio and OU was down 3-2.
Ottawa tied the game on
Tyler Farnham's single to left, 3-3, and took the lead on an infield single by
Cole Broughton, 4-3.
Saint Mary retook the lead in the top of the third with two runs, 5-4. After a scoreless fourth by both teams, Ottawa pushed two more runs across home plate in the bottom of the fifth.
With two outs, Astacio singled to right. Vulcano was hit by a pitch and OU had two on. A passed ball moved Astacio to third, giving OU runners on the corners.
Zachary Spradlin reached first on a fielder's choice. The shortstop tried to get Vulcano out at first but he beat the throw. Astacio scored from third to tie the game at 5-5. Ottawa retook the lead on a Weisner single that scored Vulcano and OU led 6-5.
Ottawa increased its lead over Saint Mary in the bottom of the seventh. Williams led OU off with a double to left. After a wild pitch moved him to third, Vulcano doubled to left and Williams scored to give the Braves a 7-5 lead. Spradlin followed that with a triple to left, scoring Vulcano and Ottawa had an 8-5 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Ottawa scored three runs on three home runs.
Cole Broughton led off OU's bottom half of the inning with his 10
th home run of the season and Ottawa led 9-5. After a ground out by
Luis DeLeon and a pop out to second by
Nicholas Sizemore, Williams hit a home run over the center field fence to give the Braves a 10-5 lead. One pitch later, Astacio hit a home run to left and the Braves took the lead and the game 11-5.
