Baseball Downs Avila, 13-3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Ottawa University baseball team won the final game of its series with Avila University on Tuesday afternoon at The Z, 13-3. Avila took the season series, 2-1.

In the top of the second inning, the OU offense scored six runs on four hits to take a 6-0 lead over Avila. The Eagles cut into the Brave lead with a run in the bottom of the third, 6-1.

The Braves earned that run back plus one more in the top of the fourth, all with two outs. Cole Broughton singled to left. Zachary Spradlin tripled to center, scoring Broughton and the Braves had a 7-1 lead. Spradlin then scored on a wild pitch and Ottawa led 8-1.

Avila answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, cutting OU's lead to 8-3. That is where the score stayed until the top of the ninth.

Spradlin doubled to left and Jonah Weisner followed that with a double of his own, scoring Spradlin to give OU a 9-3 lead. Connor Jeffers was hit by a pitch and the Braves had runners at first and second. A wild pitch moved Weisner to third and Jeffers to second.

Brandon Kelley put the ball in play, reaching first on an error. Weisner scored, giving the Braves a 10-3 lead. Ottawa scored another run on a sacrifice fly to left by Brad Grant, increasing the OU lead to 11-3. The Braves scored their final two runs of the inning on a two run home run by Robby Williams and the Braves took the lead and the game, 13-3.

  • Reigning KCAC Player of the Week, Zachary Spradlin, continued his hot hitting. He went 4-for-5 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in two.
  • Jonah Weisner had three hits in five at bats, driving in two runs and scoring one.
  • Robby Williams led the Braves with three RBI.
  • Nolan Maldonado pitched in four innings, striking out three.
  • Matt Nolan earned the win, striking out three in three innings and only allowing one hit.

Ottawa (28-12, 16-7) is back on the road on Saturday, April 15 to start its three game series with Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kan. Game one of the double header on Saturday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
