LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team won its fifth straight game with an 8-2 victory over the University of Saint Mary at the USM Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Braves have won the series with the Spires, 2-0, with one more game to play in Ottawa on Tuesday, April 25.
Ottawa took the early lead in the top of the first inning.
Zachary Spradlin singled, stole second, and moved to third on a dropped third strike. The Braves executed a double steal and Spradlin cross home plate to give OU a 1-0 lead.
The Braves increased their lead in the top of the third.
Tyler Farnham was hit by a pitch and stole second to give OU a runner in scoring position. A passed ball by the USM catcher moved Farnham 90 feet from home. Spradlin scored Farnham with a double to left, giving OU a 2-0 lead.
USM rallied, tying the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth and the fifth, 2-2. The Braves retook the lead in the top of the sixth.
Cole Broughton doubled to lead off the inning for the Braves. A single to right by Spradlin moved Broughton to third. He scored on a passed ball and Ottawa led 3-2. Spradlin, who had moved to third on the passed ball, scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Nicholas Sizmore and the Braves had a 4-2 lead.
Ottawa pushed another run across home plate in the top of the seventh.
Connor Jeffers walked and then swiped second.
Liam Vulcano grounded out to the pitcher, moving Jeffers to third. Jeffers then stole home and OU had a 5-2 lead.
The Braves scored three runs in the top of the eighth, extending their lead to 8-2. Saint Mary was not able to rally and Ottawa took the 8-2 victory.
