Football is Defeated in Home Opener by Friends, 49-20

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University football team fell 49-20 in its home opener to Friends University at AdventHealth Field on Saturday night. The Braves finished the game with 375 yards of total offense while the Falcons had 482 yards.

Friends struck first, scoring on its first two offensive possessions to take a 14-0 lead over the Braves. Ottawa cut into the Falcon lead on its second offensive possession of the game.
OU put together a 12 play, 75 yard drive that ended in a Billy Maples 14 yard touchdown pass to Eric McQueen. The Rhett Andersen extra point kick was good and OU was within 14-7 of Friends with 1:48 left in the first quarter.

The Falcons responded with their third scoring drive of the game, taking a 20-7 lead over OU with 10:48 left in the half.

Ottawa was not able to find the endzone on its next offensive possession and had to punt, giving Friends back the ball at the end of the second quarter. The Falcons added another touchdown right before the half, taking a 27-7 lead over the Braves into the locker room.  

OU received the ball to start the second half and moved it to the Falcon 22 yard line. That is where the drive stalled. Andersen attempted a 40 yard field goal but the kick went wide left and Friends took over on its own 29 yard line.

Friends increased its lead on its next offensive possession, taking a 35-7 lead over OU with 6:53 left in the third quarter. On OU's next trip down the field, the Braves were able to answer with a touchdown of their own. Malaki Peko ran the ball in from two yards out. Andersen's extra point kick split the uprights and Ottawa trailed 35-14 with 3:34 remaining in the third quarter.

The Falcons scored on its second consecutive offensive possession in the second half, increasing its lead to 42-14. Ottawa cut into the lead once more with 8:11 left in the fourth quarter. Maples completed his second touchdown pass of the day, this one 49 yards, to De'Anthony Curtis. The extra point attempt was blocked and Ottawa was down 42-20 with 6:46 to go in the game.

The Braves attempted an onside kick but the ball did not travel 10 yards and went out of bounds at the Ottawa 41 yard line. Four plays later, Friends found the endzone to take the lead and the game, 49-20.
