North Newton, Kan.- The Ottawa men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Bethel Invite on Saturday, a day in which the temperature stayed low and the wind stayed high, but the Braves were still able to make the most of less-than-desirable conditions.
The weather conditions prevented a lot of OU athletes from competing in their usual races, as Coach Whittaker gave many of them the option not to compete. "I always tell them that an athlete's best ability is availability, and being healthy and able to train properly is a lot more important right now than competing at an early-season meet where the conditions aren't conducive to great performances."Â
While many of the sprinters did not compete in some or all of their usual events, there were a handful who did—along with almost all the field event athletes. The javelin throw was the event that provided the most excitement on Saturday, with 6 OU athletes posting lifetime-best marks. Jacob Ludwick was the star of the show however, using his very first attempt of the season to launch the javelin 63.5 meters—shattering his personal record, the meet record, and the school record which had stood since Shane Koranda threw it 62.66 meters in 1991. Â
"Jacob deserves it," Coach Whittaker said. "I'm not sure I've ever coached anyone who takes their event more seriously than Jacob does. He's a great example of how an athlete should study their craft, he works his tail off, and he's like having another coach on staff. I'm not sure what we're going to do when he graduates at the end of the year, but we're going to enjoy having him while it lasts."  Jacob's throw was also an NAIA national championship "A" standard and currently ranks 4th in the NAIA.Â
The Braves also had 1st place finishes in three other events, with Kayron Johnson winning the men's 110m hurdles, JayOnna Perry winning the women's 100m hurdles, and Jah'Nisha Campbell winning the women's high jump.Â
