Women's Flag Football Captures Fourth Straight KCAC Championship

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's flag football team captured the KCAC Championship with a 35-14 victory over Kansas Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at AdventHealth Field.

The OU defense set up the Ottawa's first scoring drive. The Braves' defense forced a three and out by the Coyotes and after the punt, OU's offense took over on the KWU 26 yard line. Six plays later OU was in the end zone. Madysen Carrera threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Alyssa Linkous. The extra point attempt was good and with 9:30 left in the first half, OU led 7-0.

The Brave defense forced another KWU punt and Ottawa answered with another scoring drive. Carrera found Marley Spielberg in the end zone for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good and Ottawa led 13-0 with 2:51 left in the first half.

Kansas Wesleyan was able to put together its first scoring drive of the game on their next offensive possession. Chihiro Iwata thew a nine yard touchdown pass to Jayla Howes. KWU went for two, it was good and the Braves took a 13-8 lead into the locker room.

Ottawa received the ball to start the second half and marched the ball down the field to extend its lead. Carrera dropped a dime to Mandolyn Scalisi, 37 yards, for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was good, giving OU a 20-8 lead with 9:42 left in the third quarter.

The Coyotes quickly cut into the Brave lead with a three play, 66 yard scoring drive. Iwata threw a 55 yard touchdown pass to Ciaran DeCuir. The extra point attempt was no good and the Braves led 20-14 with 7:58 remaining in the third quarter.

The Braves answered with its second straight scoring drive. OU marched the ball, 11 plays in all, down the field and ended the drive with a 10 yard touchdown pass from Carrea to Spielberg. OU went for two. Carrera connected with Linkous and the Braves had a 28-14 lead with 1:36 left in the third quarter.

On the Coyotes next offensive possession, KWU moved the ball down to the OU 27 yard line. On fourth and seven, the Ottawa defense came away with the stop and OU took over on downs with 6:36 left in the game.

The Braves milked the clock, using 6:03 on their final offensive possession of the game that ended with a seven yards Carrera touchdown run. The extra point was good and OU took the lead and the game, 35-14.

  • Ottawa finished the game with 317 yards of offense, 274 yards passing and 43 yards rushing.
  • Kansas Wesleyan had 299 yards of offense, 270 yards passing and 29 yards rushing.
  • Madysen Carrera led OU in rushing with 37 yards. She also had one rushing touchdown. Carrera was 32-for-38 through the air for 274 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Alyssa Linkous led OU with 13 receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown.
  • Mandolyn Scalisi had five receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown.
  • Hailee McKay and Jukanie Washington had four flag pulls apiece. Washington had two pass break ups.

Ottawa (11-4, 11-1) will now play in the KCAC Tournament, April 20 and April 21.
