Baseball Downs Bethany, 13-2

LINDSBORG, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team defeated Bethany College, 13-2, in seven innings on Friday afternoon at Phillip Anderson Baseball Field.

Ottawa took the lead in the top of the second inning. Liam Vulcano singled to center and the moved to third on a single by Anthony Soria. Tyler Farnham's single scored both Vulcano and Soria, giving OU a 2-0 lead.

The Braves increased their lead in the top of the third. Back-to-back singles by Nicholas Sizemore and Marcellus Pearson gave OU runners on first and second. Sizemore was able to move to third on Dylan Garcia's fly out. Vulcano's sacrifice bunt scored Sizemore and the Braves led 3-0. Soria's single to left brought Pearson home, increasing the OU lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the third, Bethany cut into OU"s lead with a run, 4-1. Ottawa answered with six runs in the top of the fourth.

Two straight walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Braves. Sizemore was hit by a pitch and Cole Broughton crossed home plate to give OU a 5-1 lead. Vulcano singled to left, scoring two and the Braves had a 7-1 lead. An error by the Swede third baseman scored two, increasing OU's lead to 9-1. Ottawa scored its final run of the inning on another Bethany error and led 10-1.

In the top of the fifth, Person's single to right scored courtesy runner Jeremy Freeman, Jr. and OU had an 11-1 lead.

The Braves scored two more runs in the top of the sixth. Farnham singled to right and Broughton was hit by a pitch. Blaine Thomas moved Farnham to third. Jackson Alaniz's sacrifice bunt scored Farnham and Ottawa had a 12-1 lead. Thomas scored OU's final run of the inning on a Bethany error and the OU lead was 13-1.

The Swedes scored one run in the sixth, cutting OU's lead to 13-2. Ottawa ended the game in the seventh. Relief pitcher Nolan Maldonado induced three straight fly outs and OU took the 13-2 victory.
