Football Falls In Overtime to Bethel, 27-24

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University football team fell 27-24 in overtime to Bethel College on Saturday afternoon at AdventHealth Field. The game was the eighth overtime contest in program history and the second time a game between OU and BC went into overtime. Ottawa is now 0-2 in games against Bethel College that have gone into overtime. The last time the two teams played an overtime game was on Oct. 26, 2019 in Ottawa. Bethel won the game 46-45.

How it Happened
The Braves broke the scoreless tie with a seven-minute scoring drive. Taylor Eggers threw a 17 yard touchdown pass to Hagan Johnson. The Rhett Andersen extra point kick was good and with 30 seconds to go in the first quarter, OU led 7-0.

It did not take long for Bethel to answer, 46 seconds to be exact. DJ Ciers threw a 65 yard touchdown pass to Josiah Buller. Matteo De Hoyos extra point kick was good and with 14:44 left in the half, the game was tied 7-7.

Ottawa was forced to punt on its next offensive possession and Bethel took over on its own seven yard line. Six plays and 93 yards later, Bethel took its first lead of the game 14-7. Bethel scored one more touchdown in the half, increasing its lead with eight seconds on the clock and the Threshers led 21-7 at the half.

Both teams punted to start the third quarter. On OU's second offensive possession of the second half, Ottawa cut into the Thresher lead. The Braves put together a 12 play, 48 yard drive that took 6:14. Eggers scored from one yard out and after the Andersen extra point kick, OU trailed 21-14.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Bethel crossed midfield and had the ball on the OU 43 yard line. The Threshers fumbled and Marcus Mendoza recovered the fumble, giving OU the ball on its own 34-yard line with 11:34 left in regulation and down 21-14.

The Brave offense put together another long scoring drive, this one 11 plays and 66 yards that took 6:11. Eggers scored the five yard touchdown. Andersen's extra point kick was good and OU tied the game 21-21 with 5:23 left in the fourth quarter.

OU's defense forced a Bethel punt with 4:24 left in regulation. Ottawa's offense moved the ball to the Thresher 42 yard line but that is where the drive stalled and the game went into overtime.
The Braves received the ball first and ended its drive with a 30 yard Rhett Andersen field goal, giving OU a 24-21 lead. On the Threshers first possession of the overtime period,  BC drove the ball to the OU 16 yard line. On second and 12 Ciers completed a 16 yard touchdown pass to Donte Hicks, giving Bethel the 27-24 victory.

  • Ottawa finished the game with 260 yards of offense, 120 yards rushing and 140 yards passing. Bethel had 373 yards of offense, 185 yards passing and 188 yards rushing.
  • Taylor Eggers was 18-for-31 through the air for 140 yards and one touchdown. He also had an interception. Eggers also led OU in rushing with 70 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
  • De'Anthony Curtis led OU with four receptions for 30 yards. Hagan Johnson had a receiving touchdown.
  • Christian Coggs led OU with eight tackles. He had 4.5 tackles for loss.
  • Ethan Fuentes finished the game with six tackles. He had one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.
  • Ethan Yinger, Marcus Mendoza, AJ Hemphill, and Payton Green had four tackles apiece.

Ottawa (0-3) returns to the road on Saturday, Sept. 21 against McPherson College in McPherson, Kan. Kick off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
