Football is Upended by McPherson, 31-14

MCPHERSON, Kan. – The Ottawa University football team fell 31-14 to McPherson College at McPherson Stadium on Saturday night. AJ Hemphill's 20 tackles against the Bulldogs tie him for second all-time in the OU record book with Doug Deveraux. He had 20 tackles against Missouri Valley College on Oct. 7, 1978. Mike Dumpert holds the school record for tackles with 22 set on Sept. 29, 1979 against Central Methodist University.

McPherson struck first, scoring the first 14 points of the game to take the early lead. Ottawa cut into the Bulldog lead on its first offensive possession of the second quarter. OU put together a seven-play, 53-yard scoring drive that ended with a Taylor Eggers one-yard touchdown run. Ethan Yinger's extra point kick was good and with 9:56 on the clock, OU trailed 14-7.

OU's defense forced a McPherson punt and with 6:43 on the clock, OU had the ball on its own 45-yard line. The Braves drove down to the Bulldog 10-yard line. A penalty by OU moved the ball to the MC 25 yard line. Ottawa attempted a 45 yard field goal but it was wide left and McPherson took over at the 4:13 mark in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs moved the ball to the OU 31 yard line and had it fourth and two. AJ Hemphill and William Agnew stopped the Bulldog ball carrier one yard short of the line to gain and OU took over on downs with 43 seconds on the clock.

The OU offense quickly moved into McPherson territory and was on the MC 11-yard line with five seconds left in the half. OU attempted a 28-yard Yinger field goal. The attempt went wide right and McPherson took a 14-7 lead into the locker room.

McPherson received the ball to open the second half and extended its lead over the Braves, 21-7. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs increased their lead 28-7.

Ottawa cut into the McPherson lead with 8:07 to go in the fourth quarter. Eggers scored from four yards out. The Yinger extra point kick was good and OU was within 28-14.

The Bulldogs were able to put three more points on the scoreboard at the 4:04 mark in the fourth with a 31 yard field goal, taking the lead and the game 31-14.

  • The Braves finished the game with 239 yards of offense, 168 yards passing and 71 yards rushing. McPherson had 441 yards of offense, 233 yards rushing and 208 yards passing.
  • Taylor Eggers was 12-for-32 through the air for 168 yards and an interception. He led OU in rushing with 29 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns.
  • De'Anthony Curtis led OU with three receptions. Keavian Long, Trevor Smith, and Anterrio White had two receptions apiece.
  • AJ Hemphill finished the game with 20 tackles.
  • Christian Coggs had 10 tackles.
  • Ethan Fuentes tallied nine tackles.
