Baseball Moves Past Southwestern 16-3

SAGINAW, Texas – The Ottawa University baseball team completed its three game sweep of Southwestern College on Sunday afternoon at Saginaw High School. The Braves took a 16-3 victory over the Moundbuilders, ending the game in seven innings.

The Moundbuilders struck first, taking a 1-0 lead over the Braves in the top of the first inning. After a scoreless first by OU, the Braves were able to push three runs across home plate in the bottom of the second.

With two outs, Cole Broughton hit a home run to center field, tying the game at 1-1. Owen Powers walked, bringing Jeremy Freeman, Jr. to the plate. He hit a home run to right and OU took a 3-1 lead.
The Braves extended their lead with three more runs in the bottom of the third. Nicholas Sizemore doubled to center and Donald Rhyne entered the game as a courtesy runner. Rhyne did not stay on second long, moving to third on a stolen base. Jackson Alaniz hit a sacrifice fly to left but reached first on a dropped fly. Rhyne scored and OU had a 4-0 lead. Ottawa took advantage of another Moundbuilder miscue. Alaniz scored on an error by the SWC short stop, giving the Braves a 5-1 lead. Broughton scored the final run of the inning for the Braves with an RBI double to left and Ottawa led 6-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ottawa scored three more runs. Freeman hit a bunt single and then moved to second with a single to right by Brian Parry. Soria walked and the bases were loaded for OU. After two strikeouts by the Braves, Gomez doubled to center, scoring Parry and Freeman to give Ottawa an 8-1 lead. The Braves scored one more run in the inning. Soria crossed home plate on a wild pitch and the Braves had a 9-1 lead.

Southwestern cut into OU's lead with two runs in the top of the sixth, 9-3. Ottawa answered with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth taking the 16-3 lead. OU's defense held Southwestern scoreless in the top of the seventh and OU took the run rule victory, 16-3.
