Baseball Sails Past Kansas Wesleyan

SALINA, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team is on an eight game winning streak after a double header sweep of Kansas Wesleyan University on Sunday evening at Dean Evans Stadium. The Braves took game one 16-7 and game two, 6-2.

Game One
OU's offense started the game off hot, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Julius Ryan doubled to left center. Dylan Garcia's home run to center scored Ryan and the Braves had a 2-0 lead. Shaun Gomez, Jr. singled to right center. Cole Broughton scored him with a home run to left center, giving Ottawa a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the second, the Braves pushed eight runs across home plate. Ottawa scored those runs on five hits and two errors to take a 12-0 lead.

KWU cut into the Brave lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, 12-2. The Braves earned those two runs, plus one more, back in the top of the third.

With two outs, Broughton singled up the middle. Nicholas Sizemore scored him with a home run to left and the Braves led 14-2. Back-to-back walks by Jesus Rodriguez and Brian Parry gave OU runners on first and second. The duo pulled off a double steal, giving Ottawa two runners in scoring position. Jeremy Freeman, Jr.'s single to left scored Rodriguez and the Braves lead 15-2.

Kansas Wesleyan cut into the Brave lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, 15-3. In the top of the fifth, Sizemore hit his second home run of the game to give the Braves a 16-3 lead.

KWU cut into the OU lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, one in the bottom of the sixth, and one in the bottom of the seventh to get within 16-7 of the Braves.

OU held the Coyotes scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings, taking the 16-7 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game Two
Kansas Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead over the Braves with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ottawa answered in the top of the second.

Nicholas Sizemore led off the inning with a bunt single and Donald Rhyne entered the game as a courtesy runner. Jesus Rodriguez hit a home run to center, scoring Rhyne and the Braves had a 2-1 lead.

Ottawa was able to extend its lead over Kansas Wesleyan with a run in the top of the fourth. Rodriguez singled to center and then moved to second on a bunt single by Brian Parry. Jeremy Freeman, Jr.'s single to right scored Rodriguez to give OU a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Braves pushed three runs across home plate to extend their lead over the Coyotes. Julius Ryan was hit by a pitch. Dylan Garcia's single to center moved Ryan to third. Shaun Gomez, Jr's sacrifice bunt scored Ryan and OU had a 4-1 lead.

Sizemore was hit by a pitch and Rhyne entered the game as a courtesy runner. Garcia and Rhyne's double steal put them both into scoring position. Garcia scored on a wild pitch and Ottawa had a 5-1 lead. OU scored its last run of the inning on an infield single to shortstop by Rodriguez and Ottawa took a 6-1 lead.

KWU scored one run in the bottom of the fifth to cut OU's lead to 6-2. Ottawa's defense did not allow a Coyote run in the sixth or seventh innings, taking the 6-2 victory.

  • Jesus Rodriguez went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in three.
  • Dylan Garcia had two hits in four at bats, scoring one run.
  • Fawster Voytko earned the win, striking out four and only allowing three hits in five innings.
