Baseball Splits with Central Baptist

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Ottawa University baseball team split the first two games of its series with Central Baptist College on Friday afternoon. Ottawa lost in nine innings, 1-0, in game one but the Braves rebounded to take game two, 6-5.

Game One
The Braves were able to get a runner on third with the chance to take the lead in three separate innings but were not able to score. In the bottom of the ninth CBC's Josh Lumsden doubled to left, scoring Iziah Tafoya to give the Mustangs a 1-0 victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Nicholas Sizemore was 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Zack Melendez pitched seven innings to earn the no decision. He struck out eight and only allowed one hit. He has struck out 19 in his last two games.
Game Two
Ottawa struck first, taking the lead in the top of the first inning. Jeremy Freeman, Jr. doubled to center and then stole second. Julius Ryan's single to right scored Freeman and the Braves had a 1-0 lead.
CBC answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead over OU. The Mustangs increased their lead with a run in the bottom of the third, 3-1.

The Braves were able to cut into the CBC lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Jaquavius Davis hit his first home run of the season, cutting the Mustang lead to 3-2.

In the top of the fifth, the Braves tied the game. Donald Rhye, pinch hitting for Branden Franz, walked. He then stole second to give OU a runner in scoring position. Brian Parry's single to right moved Rhyne 90 feet from home. Freeman's single to left scored Rhyne and the game was tied, 3-3.

The Mustangs answered in their bottom half of the fifth with two runs to retake the lead 5-3. Ottawa responded with two runs of its own in the top of the sixth.

Ryan led off the inning with an infield single and then moved to second on an error by the Mustang shortstop. Dylan Garcia reached first on a miscue by the CBC third baseman. Ryan took advantage of the error and scored to put OU within 5-4. Cole Broughton singled to right to score Robby Williams, who was in the game as a pinch runner for Garcia, and OU tied the game 5-5.

In the top of the seventh, the Braves retook the lead. Branden Franz led off OU with a walk. Parry's sacrifice bunt moved Franz to second. A ground out to second by Freeman moved Franz to third. He was able to score on a wild pitch and the Braves had a 6-5 lead.

Cameron Sistrunk entered the game for the save opportunity in the bottom of the seventh. He struck out the first two Mustangs and then ended the game with a ground out to second, giving OU a 6-5 victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Julius Ryan led the Braves with two hits. He scored one run and had one RBI.
  • Jeremy Freeman, Jr. finished the game with three stolen bases to bring his total this season to 11.
  • Ryan Wilwers pitched 4.1 innings, striking out two.
  • Collin Heffernan earned the win, pitching 1.2 innings.
  • Cameron Sistrunk recorded his first save of the season and his seventh career save overall.
Who is Next
Ottawa (5-1) returns to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 8 to finish its series with Central Baptist College. Game three of the series is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
