(21) Baseball Splits Double Header With Tabor

HILLSBORO, Kan. – The (21) Ottawa University baseball team took the series, 2-1, over Tabor College on Saturday afternoon at the Bluejay Baseball Field. Ottawa took game one of the double header 18-17 to clinch the series. Tabor won the final game, 5-2. It is OU's first series win in Hillsboro since the 2021 season.

Game One
Ottawa took the lead in the top of the first inning. Cole Broughton walked and moved to second on a single to center by Jackson Alaniz. Anthony Soria hit an infield single, scoring Broughton and the Braves lead 1-0. Jaquavius Davis cleared the bases with a home run and OU had the 4-0 lead.

In the top of the second, the Braves increased their lead. Jeremy Freeman, Jr. hit an infield single and then stole second. Julius Ryan moved Freeman to third with a ground out. Freeman scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Nicholas Sizmore and OU had a 5-0 lead. Dylan Garcia increased the Brave lead with a home run and Ottawa led 6-0. The Braves scored two more runs in the inning. Broughton reached first on an infield single and Alaniz scored him with a home run, giving the Braves an 8-0 lead.

Tabor cut into the Brave lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. The Buejays scored four more runs in the bottom of the third and OU led 8-5. In the top of the fourth, OU scored four runs to increase its lead over Tabor.

Julius Ryan reached first with an infield single. Sizemore scored him with a home run and OU led 10-5. Ottawa scored two more runs on Alaniz's second home run of the game and OU had a 12-5 lead.
Tabor answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, cutting OU's lead to 12-8. The Braves pushed two more runs across home plate in the top of the sixth.

Broughton led off the inning with a home run and the Braves had a 13-8 lead. A second home run by Davis in the game increased the OU lead to 14-8.

In the bottom of the sixth, Tabor scored two more runs to get within 14-10 of OU. Ottawa scored three more runs in the top of the seventh.

Sizemore was hit by a pitch, bringing in Brian Parry as a courtesy runner. Garcia walked and OU had runners on first and second. Broughton singled to center, scoring Parry and the Braves led 15-10. Alaniz scored Donald Rhyne, who was in the game as a pinch runner for Garcia, and Broughton to increase the OU lead to 17-10.

In the bottom of the seventh, Tabor cut into the OU lead with three runs, 17-13. The Braves increased their lead over the Bluejays in the top of the eighth inning. Sizemore doubled to left and Parry entered as a courtesy runner. Garcia followed that double with one of his own, scoring Parry and OU led 18-13.

Tabor made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. The Bluejays scored four runs to cut the OU lead to 18-17. Cameron Sistruck got the strike out and the fly out to end the game and Ottawa took the 18-17 victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Jackson Alaniz was 4-for-6 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in six. He hit two home runs.
  • Jaquavius Davis was 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. He hit two home runs for the Braves.
  • Zack Melendez pitched four innings, striking out six.
Game Two
Ottawa broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. Julius Ryan walked. He stole second and advanced to third on an error by the TC catcher. Ryan scored on a wild pitch and the Braves had a 1-0 lead.

Tabor answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead over the Braves. The Bluejays scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, increasing their lead to 5-1. Ottawa cut into the Tabor lead with a run in the top of the sixth.

Nicholas Sizemore hit a home run and the Braves were down 5-2. Ottawa was unable to rally in the top of the seventh and Tabor took the 5-2 victory.
