STERLING, Kan. – The (22) Ottawa University baseball team opened its series at Sterling College with a 10-3 victory over the Warriors on Friday afternoon.
Sterling struck first, taking a 1-0 lead over the Braves in the bottom of the first inning. Ottawa answered in the top of the second.
Nicholas Sizemore led OU off with a bunt single.
Jaquavius Davis followed that with a single to left. His hit moved
Garrett Dodd, who was in the game as a courtesy runner for Sizemore, to second. The Braves loaded the bases with a bunt single by
Anthony Soria.
Jeremy Freeman, Jr., scored Dodd with a fielder's choice and the game was tied, 1-1. Ottawa took the lead on a bunt by
Donald Rhyne, that scored Davis and OU the 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Braves extended their lead over Sterling. Soria led OU off with a walk and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Rhyne reached first on a walk and Ottawa had runners on first and second.
Brian Parry's single up the middle scored Soria and Ottawa had a 3-1 lead. A passed ball scored Rhyne, giving the Braves a 4-1 lead. Ottawa scored its final run of the inning on a single to right by
Cole Broughton. His hit scored Parry and OU had a 4-1 lead.
The Braves scored another run in the top of the fifth inning. Davis was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double to right by Freeman. Parry scored Davis, giving the Braves a 6-1 lead.
The Warriors cut into the Brave lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ottawa earned those two runs back, plus one more, in the top of the sixth.
Ryan led OU off with a triple to left center and
Dylan Garcia walked, giving OU two on. Broughton's sixth home run of the season scored both and the Braves took a 9-3 lead.
Ottawa pushed one more run across home plate in the top of the eighth. Ryan walked and then stole second. Garcia's single to right scored Ryan, giving OU the lead and the game 10-3.

- Cole Broughton and Brian Parry had three hits apiece. Broughton led OU with four RBI.
- Donald Rhyne reached base with three walks.
- Ottawa stole seven bases in the game. Jeremy Freeman, Jr. had two. Those seven bring OU's stolen base total to 90, which is ranked third in the NAIA. That total is fifth in the OU record book and already surpasses last season's total of 85. The school record of 155, set in 2022.
- Ryan Wilwers pitched 4.2 innings, striking out four.
- Luis Diaz earned the win, striking out nine in 3.1 innings and only allowing one hit.

The Braves (18-3, 9-1) return to the diamond to finish their series with Sterling on Saturday, March 8 at the Sterling Baseball Field. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
